How to Clean and Maintain Your Nail Drill

A professional nail drill is a significant investment. Proper maintenance keeps it performing correctly, extends its service life, and — in a professional setting — meets hygiene standards for client safety.

This guide covers cleaning and maintenance for Saeyang Marathon machines. The principles apply across the range, from the Champion + H35LSP to the ECO 450.

Daily Maintenance

After Each Client

Bits:

  • Remove the bit using reverse rotation (switch to reverse before removing)
  • Brush loose debris with a metal nail brush or stiff bristle brush
  • Place used bits in a disinfection solution appropriate for your salon's protocols

Handpiece exterior:

  • Wipe down the handpiece body with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
  • Do not saturate — moisture should not enter the handpiece body
  • Check the chuck end (where the bit sits) for product buildup

Spring cable (if fitted):

  • Wipe down with a dry or lightly damp cloth
  • Avoid pulling or stretching the cable beyond its natural extension

Control unit:

  • Wipe the exterior with a dry or lightly damp cloth
  • Keep the speed dial and display area clean — product dust accumulates around buttons

Weekly Maintenance

Handpiece Lubrication

Marathon handpieces benefit from regular lubrication. Use a purpose-made handpiece oil (available from Coheal):

  1. Switch the machine off
  2. Apply one or two drops of handpiece oil into the chuck opening (where the bit sits)
  3. Run the handpiece briefly at low speed (10,000 rpm) to distribute the oil
  4. Wipe away any excess oil from the chuck end

Lubrication intervals depend on usage — daily use in a busy salon may need weekly lubrication; part-time use monthly.

Bit Cleaning

Carbide and diamond bits accumulate product residue that reduces cutting efficiency. Weekly deep cleaning:

  1. Soak bits in acetone or isopropyl alcohol for 5–10 minutes
  2. Scrub with a metal brush to remove softened product
  3. Rinse and allow to dry fully before use
  4. Inspect for wear — a dull bit that drags rather than cuts should be replaced

Control Unit

  • Check the connection where the handpiece cable meets the control unit — product dust can accumulate at this joint
  • Clean with a dry brush or compressed air if accessible
  • Ensure the foot pedal connection is clean and seated properly

Sterilisation

What Can Be Sterilised

Bits: Most metal nail drill bits (carbide, diamond) can be autoclaved. Check manufacturer guidance — some diamond bits or bits with plastic shanks are not autoclave-safe. When in doubt, use chemical disinfection.

Handpiece: Do NOT autoclave the handpiece. The precision bearings inside the handpiece are damaged by autoclave temperatures. Wipe-down with appropriate disinfectant is the correct method for handpiece hygiene.

Control unit: Wipe-down only — never immerse or saturate.

Chemical Disinfection

For bits that can't be autoclaved, and for handpiece surfaces:

  • Use a disinfectant rated for beauty/nail industry use
  • Follow the manufacturer's contact time requirements
  • Allow bits to dry fully before use

Storing Your Drill

  • Store the handpiece on its silicone stand or in the included holder — not loosely in a bag where it can be knocked
  • Keep bits in a covered container to prevent damage to cutting edges
  • Coil the spring cable loosely — don't force it into a tight coil
  • Store the control unit in a stable position where it won't be knocked over

When to Get the Handpiece Serviced

Handpieces contain precision bearings that wear over time. Signs that a handpiece needs service or replacement:

  • Increased vibration at speeds that previously felt smooth
  • Noise (grinding, clicking) that wasn't present before
  • Reduced speed consistency under load
  • The handpiece running hot faster than normal

Saeyang Marathon handpieces have replacement parts (including rotors) available from Coheal. A worn rotor is a relatively affordable fix that restores performance.

Control Unit Issues

If the control unit displays an overload error (on machines with overload protection like the ECO 450 or Escort III): press the reset button. If errors are recurring, the handpiece may be drawing too much current — check for a worn bearing.

If the digital display is inconsistent or the dial is unresponsive, contact Coheal — Marathon machines carry warranty coverage.

Summary Maintenance Schedule

| Task | Frequency | |---|---| | Bit brush clean | After each client | | Handpiece wipe-down | After each client | | Bit disinfection/sterilisation | After each client | | Handpiece lubrication | Weekly (heavy use) / Monthly (light use) | | Bit deep clean (acetone soak) | Weekly | | Control unit clean | Weekly | | Bit inspection / replacement | Ongoing |
